I’m sure we can all agree that camp is the best place on Earth. After all, there aren’t many places where you can kayak with your buddies, learn to shoot a bow and arrow, make a friendship bracelet, eat great food, and lay out underneath a blanket of stars; all in the span of a day no less. Not to mention the other days where you can expect just as much, if not more fun!
But… have you ever wondered what camp might be like after everyone goes home?
Through my many moons here as a camper, counselor, and even director, I would leave the same day as everyone else and my mind would be left to wonder what this magical place might be like after the summer comes to a close. However, now that I work here year-round, I can provide you with the inside scoop and all of the juicy details that come with it!
The first few days after camp, the directors and I need to unwind a bit. After a job well done and making sure that we made everyone’s summer as awesome as humanly possible, it’s important that we spend time with our families!
Just like everyone else, we have been away from our families for a long time. So naturally, we have to catch up and tell them all about how amazing the summer has been!
After a few days of telling great stories and unwinding a bit, we start heading back to the office in preparation for the off-season. Though our working hours may be a little less, we are still working just as hard to make sure that camp will be the exact same, if not better for the next summer!
But my guess is that you already figured that was the case…
I could tell you all about the camp meetings, the registration process, the groundskeeping, and all of the little things we do around the camp to make sure that we are ready to go for next summer, but… you’re probably wondering what it’s like to have all of the awesome things at camp to myself for a whole year.
And I won’t lie, it’s pretty sweet!
After my work day is done, I can go kayaking whenever I want, play the Vista 9, shoot hoops to my hearts content, pickleball, tennis, you name it!
It’s hard not to brag when you live at the best place on Earth.
But… something feels different.
I can kayak up and down the river as much as I want, but I won’t have any friends there to help me up when my kayak flips over.
I can play the Vista 9 until the sky goes dark, but I don’t get to see a camper grinning ear to ear because they were able to sink a 20 foot putt.
And I can play basketball until my jumpshot rivals Steph Curry, but I don’t get to see the rivalry between 2 tribes giving it their all in a morning tribe comp.
Camp just isn’t the same without everyone here!
The dedication and commitment that we show in the offseason to make improvements, to help out with any questions regarding registration, to make sure that we are up to date with any saftey guidelines, to hire the best staff possible, and to make sure our schedules are filled with fun, isn’t just so we can say “We’re the best!”.
We do it for YOU!
We do it for the campers who have never been away from their parents before, but are asking to come back for 4 weeks on closing day.
We do it for the counselors who were once in their shoes and want to provide the same great experience they had as campers.
We do it for the parents who can rest easy knowing their child is safe, having the time of their life!
Camp after camp is realizing how much we miss everyone, and how much we can’t wait for next summer! I am blessed to say that I get to live here at Vista Camps! It’s a beautiful place with access to more things than I could ever dream of using, but camp isn’t camp because it’s an amazing piece of property or because of the unlimited things to do.
Camp is camp because of YOU!
So, with that inside scoop that I’ve provided, I’ll leave you with one more message.
HURRY UP SUMMER 2027!!
