What Counselors Want out of Camp

Hey there! My name is Taylor Broussard and if you don’t know what I do at camp, one of my main responsibilites is getting to recruit and interview perspective counselors. Hiring counselors is a real challenge. When we go out to recruit counselors, we’re not looking for tennis teachers or people who know a thing or two about making bracelets. We are looking for young men and women who want to cultivate meaningful relationships with your campers.

If you’ve ever been a camper, you know that the reason you keep coming back to camp is not because you enjoy shooting bows and arrow, playing soccer, or swimming in the river (despite all of that being totally awesome). You keep coming back because of the relationships you’ve built here. I’ve had the chance to interview many different people, but my favorite type of counselor I interview is our C.I.T. (Counselor in Training). These are prospective counselors who are 17 years old and have aged out of being a camper. During an interview, I ask C.I.T.s, “What about being a camp counselor is appealing to you?” The answer I get 95% of the time is, “Because I had someone I looked up to when I was a camper, and that’s what I want to be for campers.” It really is special to witness this cycle take place before your eyes.

As we continue to hiring staff for this summer, just know that we’re hiring with a deeper purpose than finding activity instructors. We’re looking for role models, coaches, mentors, and friends who can be guides to your campers in an important stage of life.

If you have someone that you know who might be a good fit as a counselor, let us know! Even if you want to come for a week we’d love to have all the counselors we can make a difference in a camper’s life.

See you next time!
