Your Favorite Role Model

What’s my favorite part of camp? I know I’m supposed to say it’s the kids—and for a long time, that was the case. There’s nothing quite like seeing a camper ride a horse for the first time, the excitement of opening campfire, or watching a girl embrace her true self. But over time, I’ve had the privilege of watching my campers grow into counselors and, eventually, parents. If I had to pick the most important part of my job, it’s raising the next generation of parents.

In a world that’s quick to highlight imperfections, camp is a place that nurtures, supports, and celebrates our differences. I’ve seen campers grow into not only amazing individuals but also compassionate parents. Being a Sierra Vista camper means learning from an early age to care for one another. Campers are celebrated for their empathy, and counselors are encouraged to lead with love. Watching our counselors step in, lead, and create an environment that celebrates each camper makes me so proud.

The people are what truly make camp special. Campers don’t return for the activities or the view—they come back for the people who made them feel seen, heard, and loved. So, who’s your favorite counselor? I’d love to share your shout-out on our social media!
