Why Camp?

Let’s hear your why?

Make a post answering the following questions and tag Vista Camps. Sancho Morriss, our beloved Boy’s Camp Director, will go first ♥

How long have you gone to camp / been in camping? My first year at Vista Camps was 1985 when I was a kindergartner in Hoot & Holler! Ingram Elementary didn’t have enough class space, so they bussed us over every morning and we used the Hollers, Cypress, and Rainbow as classrooms. I spent a little time most summers after that hanging out with Justin while camp was going on, probably driving the counselors nuts that we jumped from activity to activity doing what we wanted! My first official year though was 1999 when I worked in the kitchen with Mrs. Becky. The year after that, I moved into a cabin between 1st and 2nd Term. From then on, I was completely sold on camp and knew it was where I wanted to spend my summers!

How did camp affect your life? Camp has affected my life in so many ways! The biggest thing I can think of is friendships. I made friends working at camp 20+ years ago that I’m still in close contact with now. On a personal level though, camp instilled self confidence that I hadn’t had before. It was a place where I could come and truly be my self and just know that I was going to be accepted. It also taught me how to work with others!

Why does camp matter to the next generation? Camp matters to the next generation because it gives kids something they can’t get anywhere else. In a world that’s so technology focused and high speed, camp slows things down. It reminds kids and counselors how to connect face to face, build friendships, and discover who they are without the pressure of the outside world. Camp teaches responsibility, empathy, confidence, and independence. These are all life skills that build leaders and just all around good human beings!
