2024 Counselors of the Year!

It’s hard to believe we’re already two months out of camp! The summer of 2024 was an unforgettable experience, and we truly feel it ran smoother than ever before! A huge part of that success is thanks to our incredible campers and the extensive planning behind the scenes. But, let’s be real—camp wouldn’t be camp without our phenomenal staff. From top to bottom, this team was rock solid!

While most of our post-term awards are all about celebrating our campers, we do have one major award for our counselors—the prestigious Counselor of the Year (COY). This honor goes to one outstanding counselor from each camp, recognizing their exceptional contributions throughout their time with us. To be eligible for COY, a counselor needs to have been here for at least six weeks, earned a Counselor of the Week (COW) title, or served as a division leader.

The big reveal happens on closing day as we say our goodbyes, and though we had so many deserving candidates, we are thrilled to announce our 2024 Counselors of the Year!

Camp Sierra Vista: Matte Trotter

Matte Trotter is a true camp legend! After eight years as a camper and four years as a counselor, she’s practically grown up with us. As a camper, Matte shone as the Starguider Chieftain, Chickasaw Chieftain, and earned the prestigious Honor Camper title in 2020. As a counselor, she’s a certified ropes instructor, lifeguard, and this summer, took on the role of division leader.

But that’s not all—Matte also stepped up as the Sierra Vista Activity Director on several occasions, wearing many hats with grace and positivity. No matter how hectic things got, she was always there with a smile, a helping hand, and great ideas. We can’t thank Matte enough for everything she’s done, and we hope to see her back at SV for many summers to come!

Camp Rio Vista: Regina Garza

Though Regina Garza has only been with us for two summers, she has embodied the Rio Vista Spirit from day one! As one of our incredible Fort Moms, her leadership and counselor skills have had a lasting impact on everyone at camp. Whether you’re a camper or staff member, you’ve likely been touched by her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering dedication.

This summer, Regina not only served as a lifeguard but also led the Rio Vista Ropes Team, making safety her top priority in every class. In the Fort, she’s been a trusted counselor who the admin team could rely on for any challenge. She’s also been a Sioux Sponsor and a multiple-time Counselor of the Week!

We are beyond grateful for Regina’s contributions to Camp Rio Vista, and we’re crossing our fingers for her to return for year number three and beyond!
